セミコロンとコロンの意味と使い方（★★★上級）

英字新聞や書籍ではよく見るのに、なかなか使い慣れない
セミコロン(;)とコロン(:)

日本では、学校で習っている方が少ないようです。

セミコロンやコロン自体、難しいものではありません。
使い慣れると便利ですし、非常に書き慣れた印象になります。

《セミコロン(;)の使用法》

１．接続副詞の代わりに等位な２つの文章をつなぐ

Keeping the kitchen clean is an important
responsibility; everyone must do his or her part to
put dirty dishes into the dishwasher and keep the
countertops clear.

【訳】キッチンを清潔に保つことは大切な義務です。全員、各自の責任で汚れた食器を食洗器に入れ、台の上をきれいにしなければなりません。

２．接続副詞を使いながら２つの文章をつなぐ

Exercising is a good way to lose weight; besides, it
also helps to build strong bones and muscles.

【訳】エクササイズは減量の良い方法です。それに、強い骨と筋肉をつくるのに役立ちます。

３．事項を並べる

The Silence of the Lambs swept the other major
categories in the Academy Awards, with Jodie Foster,
for Best Actress; Anthony Hopkins, for Best Actor;
and Jonathan Demme, for Best Director.

【訳】「羊達の沈黙」はアカデミー賞において他の主要カテゴリーも総なめにした。ジョディ・フォスターがBest Actress 賞、アンソニー・ホプキンスがBest Actor 賞、
ジョナサン・デミがBest Director 賞というように。

《コロン(:)の使用法》

１．何かを列記する

I needed to buy three things at the grocery store:
milk, orange juice, and cream cheese.

【訳】食料品店で３つのものを買わなければ。ミルク、オレンジジュース、それとクリームチーズ。

２．何かを定義する、説明する

Osaka: the capital of Osaka Prefecture with a population of 2.5 million.

【訳】大阪市：　大阪府の府庁所在地。人口２５０万

I’ll tell you what I did: I laughed out loud!

【訳】何をしたか教えてあげる。大笑いしたのよ！
